Colleges & Universities ll HONORABLE MENTION OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 Marshall Student Center UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA, TAMPA, FLA. O NE OF THE LARGEST IN THE SOUTHEAST, THE UNIVERSITY of South Florida's Marshall Student Center serves as a gathering place for student organizations and as a focal point for many of the University's activi- ties. Replacing the original student center, the new Student Center embraces the history and diversity of student life within a new, modern construct integrating the technologies that the 21st-century student expects. Acknowledging the diversity of the University community and the goal of sustaining and strengthening its connectivity, the Student Center as a village — a collection of buildings centered about a Town Square — became the organizing principle for the project. Adhering to this principle, the build- ing's program resides in a series of pavilions focused on an atrium, providing a central gathering space and access to all program elements. The geometry and form of the pa- vilions within the Student Center are distinct elements, clearly defined in an architectural character consistent with the activities accommodated within. The project caters to the variety of student life by integrating foodservice, retail, a computer lab, meeting rooms, lounges, study rooms and offices. Simultaneously, a ball- room, auditorium, radio station, gallery, meditation room and plazas enhance the quality of student life.
