College Updates Flooring W ITH AN ENROLLMENT of 31,000 students, the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL, is the largest single-campus community college in the nation outside of California. At the heart of the campus, the Student Resource Center (SRC) is one of the school's most traffi cked buildings; it hous - es fi nancial aid offi ces, meeting rooms, an admissions offi ce, an information desk, a campus bookstore, and the College's main dining hall. To withstand the constant fl ow of foot traffi c from hungry college students, the College of DuPage installed noraplan degree from nora systems, Inc. in the SRC dining hall and food service areas. The college tasked Jay Johnson, AIA, LEED-AP, CSI, and studio director at Legat Architects in Oak Brook, IL, with updat- ing the look of a building that had terrazzo installed for more than 20 years and with selecting a fl oor covering that could introduce more color and withstand foot traffi c. The food service areas of the SRC also required a low-maintenance fl ooring to support a space with the potential for food and drink spills. Johnson cites resil- iency, maintenance benefi ts, and comfort underfoot as driving factors in the fl ooring selection. "The fact that noraplan degree is a 3mm product that never has to be waxed or coated made selecting the fl oor covering an easy decision," says Johnson. Since the renovation, Johnson and Ron- ald Dulceak, chief engineering manager, College of DuPage, agree that the activ- ity and participation from students have increased dramatically. "Students now come here to meet with friends, study, or just hang out, and I think with the updates that we have made, it's a much more inviting and comfortable place for them to spend their time."
