Total Project Cost Project Completion Date GREEN DESIGN Principles Followed CHPS T HIS PROJECT EXPANDED THE EXISTING EAST HAMPTON HIGH SCHOOL by over 100,000 square feet, adding a new cafeteria and student lounge, new class- rooms, multipurpose community spaces and a new library media center. The project also included a complete renovation and upgrade of the existing spaces, including new finishes, lighting, MEP systems and all new FF&E.; The East Hampton High School project became the first project in New York State to utilize the guidelines being developed under CHPS. In fact, the design for this project helped refine the devel- opment of the final criteria and became the test case for the success of this new program (the East Hampton project is on the cover of the NYSED CHPS guideline book). NYSED also heavily used the project to promote CHPS and to convince school districts across the state of the benefits of using sustainable design. The final design exceeded the requirements and achieved CHPS certification when completed in 2011. The new additions are oriented to the northwest to reduce heat gain while the southwest elevations utilize sunshades to reflect direct sunlight. The large assembly spaces were designed to be naturally lit most of the time with daylight sensors dimming the lighting as required. Overall the building exceeds the NYS energy construction code by more than 20 percent. The site was also developed in a sustainable fashion with the footprint designed to optimize cut and fill, entrances oriented to minimize student exposure to bus emissions, recycled materi- als used for multisport synthetic playing fields and site irrigation kept to a minimum and only used on ballfields.
