THE 2012 SUSTAINABILITY & INNOVATION AWARDS INSPIRATIONAL, INVENTIVE AND INNOVATIVE IDEAS IN GREEN DESIGN W HETHER WE USE THE TERMS SUSTAINABLE, high-performance, green or environmentally friendly, there are plenty of good reasons for schools and universities to embrace sustainabil- ity. Among them is the need to provide improvements in lifestyle, comfort, satisfaction and health along with protecting ecosystems and saving energy and resources. That is why we are again featuring our Innovation & Sustainability Awards. One of the goals behind the creation of these awards is to recognize innovation, share best practice and provide schools and colleges access to inspirational ideas in green design. This special section includes the judges' choices of the best green designs of K-12 and higher education projects in three categories — Building as a Teaching Tool, Energy Effi ciency & Conservation, and Site Se- lection & Development. Unlike other award programs, where projects are judged solely on whole building design, these projects were judged on the individual elements and innovative solutions that helped make them qualify as green, or sustainable. The 2012 Innovation & Sustainability Awards program was not designed to compete with LEED, CHPS or other certifi cation programs, or to measure the total end results. ON THE WEB You can fi nd more detailed information about each of these projects, past winners, contact information for architects and future showcase information online at: www.EducationDesignShowcase.com 44 CP&M; / SUSTAINABILITY & INNOVATION AWARDS / NOVEMBER 2012 WWW.PLANNING4EDUCATION.COM All of the projects but those in the category of Building as a Teach- ing Tool were judged based upon the project's sustainability, main- tainability, innovation/ creativeness, aesthetics and cost effectiveness of the solution. Those in the Building as a Teaching Tool category were judged according to the mindfulness of materi- als, energy and environment; the design as a learning laboratory; student and community involvement; integration into the course- work; and innovation/creativeness. We hope this year's Innovation & Sustainability Award entries provide you with ideas about how to make your campus more sustainable.
