has recognized the University for its imple- mentation of a sustainable landscape plan that includes 8.5 acres of native plantings. Campus Provost Douglas Knerr and a team of faculty, staff, and students de- veloped a Sustainability Master Plan for the Schaumburg Campus in 2010. Since its approval, the University has: removed resource-intensive turf grass, installing prairie grass and native wildfl owers in its place; installed landscape beds of native plants, including in parking islands; planted native white swamp oak trees; put in butter- fl y and rain gardens and a permeable paver walkway; and started a community garden. Pitt Guarantees Undergrad Internships In an effort to help University of Pitts- burgh (Pitt) students obtain a competitive edge and prepare for life after graduation, the University's Offi ce of Career Development and Placement Assistance (CDPA) is unveil- ing an initiative that guarantees every under- graduate the opportunity of an internship. Started this fall, any registered Pitt under- graduate on the Pittsburgh campus is eligible to participate in the Internship Preparation Program (IPP), which is the fi rst step in a student obtaining an internship placement. Once students complete the IPP, they meet individually with CDPA staff for personal résumé reviews, mock interviews, and support in identifying strong matching opportunities for internships. The guaran- teed internship opportunities will begin for students early in 2013. Higher Education Job Statistics Show Growth The number of jobs in higher education continues to grow faster than overall U.S. employment, but the difference in growth rates narrowed in Q2 2012, according to a recent report from HigherEdJobs (www.higheredjobs.com/career/quarterly- report.cfm). An analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data by HigherEdJobs fi nds OCTOBER 2012 / COLLEGE PLANNING & MANAGEMENT 9 that the number of jobs in higher education grew 2.1 percent during Q2 2012 compared to growth of 1.4 percent for all U.S. jobs, a difference of 0.7 percentage points. A year earlier in Q2 2011, the number of higher education jobs grew 2.2 percent, compared to overall job growth of 1.0 percent, or a gap of 1.2 percentage points. The report analyzes job posting data from colleges and universities that have continu- ously subscribed to the company's unlimited posting plan for four years or longer, a group of more than 700 schools, as well as data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
