Campus Scene IN THE SPOTLIGHT AsktheExpert New Living and Learning Center for Husson University This Month Procurement How do institutions procure and manage MRO goods effectively? IN HIGHER EDUCATION, WE SEE COMMON challenges administrations face in maintaining their facilities. There can be many, and often they are all happening at once. Aging buildings prevent the ability to stan- HUSSON UNIVERSITY'S NEW LIVING AND LEARNING CENTER on the University's Bangor, ME, campus, the fi rst facility of its kind on a college or university campus in Maine, is complete. The fi rst fl oor of the fi ve-story, $11M facility is dedicated to learning and includes faculty offi ces and mock classrooms with fl exible furniture, storage props, com- munications technology, and other resources to increase opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. The upper four fl oors contain two-bedroom suites for nearly 250 students. Each suite includes a bathroom and living area and accommodates up to four students. Each fl oor has a common area for gatherings that is fl ooded with an abundance of natural light by the fl oor-to-ceiling windows on each end of the space. The new building is LEED Gold certifi ed. Some of the building's green features include daylight harvesting, low-fl ow plumbing fi xtures, high-effi ciency lighting, non- toxic building materials, drain water heat recovery, and solar hot water panels. These energy-saving features are expected to save the University more than $50,000 a year. The Living and Learning Center was a design-build collaboration between Win- ton Scott Architects of Portland, ME, and AlliedCook Construction. Foodservice Grant Applications Being Accepted The Hobart Center for Foodservice Sustainability (HCFS) has announced plans to award a $5,000 grant to the organization judged to have the best- executed foodservice sustainability project. Applications are currently being accepted for the sixth annual HCFS grant. Applicants can enter by submit- ting a case study of 10 or fewer pages demonstrating how their program addresses sustainability challenges such as reducing energy and water use, decreasing wastewater or solid waste, or implementing Farm-to-Fork programs or other combined programs. Applications must include a fi nancial analysis of the program addressing these areas: the cost of implementation, con- tinuing costs, cumulative costs saved, and return on investment. The process to locate and buy those items can be very involved. Skilled tradespeople are leaving campuses to shop and buy product from scores of suppliers, the work-order process may not be tied to inven- tory use, and too much material is being stocked to ensure against emergency. These conditions usually mean thousands of dollars in additional process costs, tens of thousands of dollars in lost time, and millions of dollars in on-hand inventory. Thinning budgets create the additional pressure of trying to do more with less. Colleges and universities are turning to key business partners to help solve the complex issues around time, money, and space. What we have discovered is that there are common solutions to these issues. Some include vendor- managed inventory programs to increase wrench time and streamline processes, connections with e-procurement systems, reallocation of ware- house resources, and reduced on-hand carrying costs. All of these solutions involve total cost of ownership, driving costs out by taking in-depth looks at process, product, inventory, supplier, and technology. It's easy for me to sense that when there is an open exchange between us and our schools — where there is that spirit of learning and continu- ous improvement — we are able to meet our mutual objectives. How can we save time, money, and space? The complex, moving parts that can sometimes overwhelm a campus operation usually come down to that question.
