Corridor Shaded by Panels at UTSA R IGID METAL FABRIC FROM Cambridge Architectural, framed in sleek narrow panels, creates an eye-catching exterior wall and effec- tively shades the corridor outside the new annex of the Multidisciplinary Studies (MS) Building on the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) campus in San Antonio, TX. The annex, referred to as the MS Renova- tion and Infi ll, provides a new location for the University's Business Auxiliary Services. Metal fabric quickly became a preferred material for the exterior corridor of the MS Renovation and Infi ll project due to its ability to divide space while shading harsh sunlight. A Cambridge Architectural mesh system was chosen to outfi t the space be- cause it looked and performed better than any other product. "When searching for materials, Cambridge's mesh was among the best we found," says Clement Medina, project manager for Alvidrez Architecture Inc., the architect of the project. "Its polished aesthetic and fi nish gives the new building an elegant texture, while matching the look and feel of existing adjacent buildings." The shading benefi ts of Cambridge architectural mesh facilitate a comfortable, pleasant exterior corridor environment. "In addition to its look, Cambridge's mesh system delivered important shading capabilities," says Medina. "The pattern chosen allows the ideal amount of light through." Practicing a design-build approach, Cambridge always lends hands-on support throughout every project to help ensure successful implementation. The MS Renovation and Infi ll structure was an- other example of this commitment. "Cambridge was on-site during the entire installation process, making it very simple for us," says Fernando Flores, VP of Operations for Amstar Inc., the general contractor of the project. "As a result, we didn't encounter any issues, and we are extremely happy with the fi nished look of the building." Beyond its aesthetic and shading ben- efi ts, the Cambridge mesh system installed at the MS Building annex is 100 percent recyclable and virtually indestructible, outlasting most other materials in durabil- ity. The mesh system holds up incredibly well in the San Antonio climate, eliminat- ing the need for its repair or replacement. www.CambridgeArchitectural.com Acoustical Shell Enhances Performances "W E'RE PROBABLY the most diverse amphitheatre in the country," says Jeff Young, Vice President of Operations with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas. This nonprofi t facility hosts up to 70 events annually, including a range of music concerts ("Rock to Bach"), opera, ballet, and graduations. Seating capacity is 16,500 to 6,500 under the roof and 10,000 on the lawn. Every summer they help host the University of Houston Moores School of Music's Texas Music Festival, an intensive four-week program that invites young musicians from around the world to com- pete against each other and also perform together. Participants study and rehearse under the guidance of an international faculty of artists, teachers, and conductors. The festival includes a free concert by the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, numbering more than 100 musicians strong. Upon opening in 1990, the Pavilion purchased a custom acoustical shell from Wenger. When the time came to replace it, several options were evaluated before again selecting Wenger. In the spring of 2012, they received a newly redesigned Wenger Diva acoustical shell; it features many improvements from the fi rst Diva launched in 1995. The tower frame is a one-piece extru- sion, enabling a higher maximum tower height — up to 40 ft. The ceiling truss accommodates more lights, which larger shells require. The integrated trim strip be- tween towers gives architects and designers more aesthetic fl exibility. Wenger's installation of the shell's 10 towers and fi ve ceiling panels went very smoothly according to Young, who adds that Wenger's on-site crew was great.
