Colleges & Universities PROJECT OF DISTINCTION OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 David B. Crabiel Hall MIDDLESEX COUNTY COLLEGE, EDISON, N.J. I N APRIL 2009, MIDDLESEX COUNTY COLLEGE RETAINED DMR Architects to provide architectural and engineering design and construction ad- ministration services for the new David B. Crabiel Hall. Students began occupying the facility in January 2011. The 36,000-square-foot building includes 13 general purpose classrooms, a 1,500-square-foot office for the Division of Corporate and Community Education, four computer labs, one culinary demonstration lab, two conference rooms, three meeting rooms, a student lounge and administrative spaces. DMR achieved each outlined goal of the project, including designing within a specific schedule and budget, creating a new campus gathering place and addressing site concerns with respect to adjacent buildings. Crabiel Hall, prominently located at one of the campus' two main entrances, is under review by the USGBC and is seeking LEED Silver certification. Sustainable features include occupancy sensors, daylighting, drought-resistant plantings and high-tech boiler and air conditioning units. DMR placed great emphasis on the involvement of faculty, staff, administrators and board members, and successfully designed an efficient, aesthetically pleasing and fiscally responsible building. The project resulted in a safe and healthy environment to serve nearly 13,000 students at Middlesex County College. EDS CURRENT ENROLLMENT SITE SIZE (ACRES) COST PER STUDENT COST PER SQ. FT.
