Colleges & Universities PROJECT OF DISTINCTION OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 Young Hall Science Center CENTRE COLLEGE, DANVILLE, KY. B UILT IN 1970 AND ONE OF THREE SCIENCE BUILDINGS ON campus, Young Hall was in need of expansion and renovations to accom- modate growing enrollments and allow greater innovations in teach- ing and learning in the sciences, especially undergraduate research. Hastings+Chivetta designed a two-story, 43,400-square-foot Science Center expansion to adjoin Young Hall on the front and side. The new entry provides an updated look for the building and is more in keeping with the classical architectural style of campus. The exterior is brick and stone masonry with a sloped shingle roof to blend with the existing campus architectural themes. The existing hall was renovated and is con- nected to the addition via a two-story sky-lit atrium space with lounges to facilitate student/faculty interaction and collaboration, a major goal for the new facility. Other considerations addressed in the building include flexible spaces, multiple science display areas, study rooms and increased energy efficiency. The expansion provides much-needed space with six new large class- rooms, eight teaching laboratories, research labs for faculty members and new facilities for animal science. The entire facility houses the psychology, psychobiology, biology, biochem- istry and molecular biology programs, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Sustainable design was an important aspect of this project, as with all projects at Centre College. The building was designed to LEED-certification standards and is pursuing Silver certification.
