Colleges & Universities l 2012 GRAND PRIZE OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 College of Education and Human Services CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. C ENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY'S NEW COLLEGE OF Education and Human Services, seeking LEED Gold certification, possesses an overall integrated approach to sustainable design and is devoted to the creation of modern student-learning environments. The facility houses a nationally renowned education program, early childhood development center, human development clinic, reading clinic, classroom and laboratory space. Exterior walls are terracotta pressure-equalized rain-screen cladding, glass curtain- wall and metal panels. Accents of slate walls echo the tradition of chalkboards in education. Insulated Low-E coated and other high-performance glazing is used in all punched windows and curtain-walls. Clerestory windows are used above primary circulation spaces to provide natural daylighting. Overhangs and extended metal frames project on southern-facing windows to shield from the sun. Low roofs and the southern high roof are de- signed with sedum and utilize ENERGY STAR-compliant roof membrane installed over rigid insulation, creating a "cool" roof structure. The building is technology-rich, offering state-of-the-art technology capabilities, including wired and wireless network access, visual presentation, distance learning, col- laboration, media capture, streaming and digital archiving of many class activities. This cohesive, integrative, technologically enriched, learner-centered environment significantly benefits students, faculty and the wider community.
