High Schools PROJECT OF DISTINCTION OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 Evans High School ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, ORLANDO, FLA. E VANS HIGH SCHOOL, A PUBLIC SCHOOL FOUNDED IN 1955, has a significant history in the community, but academically had been hindered by outdated learning modules and lack of integrated technology. In order to create a new, state-of-the-art 21st-century replacement school, the academic classroom buildings were designed around small learning communities. These communities create collaborative learning spaces that contain STEM classrooms and provide opportunities for hands-on learning. Each classroom contains natural daylight- ing, energy-efficient occupant sensors, 21st-century technology including Smart Boards and is flexible to accommodate future changes in curriculum. One of the school's unique spaces is the Health Clinic, which not only serves the needs of the school, but also the needs of the local community. By offering this social services program to the community, it creates an engaging atmosphere that provides students with advanced educa- tional opportunities while bringing the community closer together. In addition, the campus was designed with a new media center, gym and state-of-the-art auditorium, equipped with the latest in sound and theatrical lighting technology. Each of these core spaces was designed for after-hours community use and is located along the perimeter of the campus with easy access to parking. Through technology and collaborative learning spaces, the school creates an innova- tive learning environment that reflects the future of education while staying true to its rich past as a cornerstone of the community.
