Elementary Schools Elem HONORABLE MENTION OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 Takoma Education Campus DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS, WASHINGTON, D.C. D ECEMBER 2010 SAW THE TAKOMA EDUCATION CAMPUS almost completely destroyed by fire. Just one year later, the school has literally risen from the ashes, thanks to a renovation and restoration effort that transformed the former open plan building into a 21st-century educational facility. The interior learning environment is completely restructured to support a new innovative arts integration program. The once windowless classrooms are now bright and airy dance and performance studios. Students enjoy abundant natural daylighting, thanks to rows of bump-out windows, "liv- ing" light wells and the extensive use of interior glass. Planning and design efforts created a series of small learning communities. Classrooms are connected by a central pathway, which offers informal learning spaces for students and acts as a visual focal point. Other student- centered efforts include sound attenuation, indoor air quality and thermal comfort. In fact, despite the fast-track, eight-month design and construction schedule, Takoma is still slated to achieve LEED Gold certification.
