Elementary Schools PROJECT OF DISTINCTION OUTSTANDING DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE IN EDUCATION 12 New Edward Hynes Elementary School ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD/RECOVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT, NEW ORLEANS, LA. T HE NEW EDWARD HYNES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS A 600-student pre-K through 8th grade school with full-size gymnasium, cafeteria, media center/library and black box theater/performance center, which is dividable into three separate areas. The new facility sits on one city block in the New Orleans Lakeview area, replacing the former 60,000-square-foot Orleans Parish Hynes Elementary Charter School destroyed by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The building along Argonne Boulevard houses administrative, student services, main entry and media center. Two-story classrooms with separate age-appropriate neighborhoods are along Harrison Avenue, and a gym, performance and cafeteria wing are along Orleans Avenue. Overflow gymnasium parking and an open play space are stretched along French Street. The outdoor amphitheater is used for assemblies and teaching on days with pleasant weather. The final design addresses Lakeview's traffic patterns, bus and car drop-off and pick-up zones, urban context, scale and an energy-conscious building orientation. The design incorporates many energy-saving features, including: 1. Daylight harvesting: light shelves, sunshades and auto-dimmers that adjust light fixture levels according to natural light level. 2. East-west orientation on most teaching buildings. 3. Occupancy sensors on lighting controls shut off all lights after 10 minutes of no motion in classrooms, offices and large spaces. 4. Energy recovery system recirculating conditioned air to mix with smaller amounts of outside fresh air.
