INTERESTING & INNOVATIVE. This is my favorite entry. I love the design, they had a sound
planning process, and they met their goals and, perhaps, exceeded them in some areas. I also love all the breakout spaces, the fl exible and soft furniture, the inclusion of whiteboards in breakout areas and all the natural light. The "perch" concept regarding the class- rooms was also very interesting and innovative. — Tracy Healy
BEST IN CLASS. BEST IN SHOW. What a story! An architect actually sold an educational value
to the client (meaning he risked losing the job). I am sure there are things in this school that do not work, but there is a concept and it was carried out. I like the collaborative space, the placement of younger high school students on an upper fl oor, keeping them

more confi ned than the juniors and seniors, and the emphasis on learning what a college is like. Best in class. Best in show. Best anyway you cut it. — Paul Abramson
COLLABORATIVE AND SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING.
Through thoughtful planning and design, the Kathlyn Joy Gil-
liam Collegiate Academy allows students to experience a collegiate environment, while maintaining appropriate supervision for high school students. The commons spaces in this school effectively provide students with a variety of environments that promote col- laborative and self-directed learning during unstructured time. — Tom Rushin
