education design showcase • K–12 PROJECT OF DISTINCTION o u ts ta n d i n g d es i g n + a rc h i t e c t u r e i n ed u c at i o n HD Woodson STEM High School diStrict oF columBia ScHoolS, WaSHington, d.c. he new h.d. woodson stem high school is the fagship project in the district's program to transform public education and educational facility design in the nation's capital. Opened in the fall of 2011, it refects the best of architectural design for education, and is a model of expectation throughout the district. SHW Group and its educational strategist, Cambridge Strategic Services, worked with DCPS staff to establish a shared understanding of the meaning and facility design implications of the instructional vision of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). SHW Group evaluated a variety of options to renovate and/or demolish the existing H.D. Woodson High School structure, developed alternative timelines for delivery (including phasing plans for an occupied facility), established sustainable design criteria and implementation strategies and facilitated staff and community dialogues. The project was developed as a LEED-Gold facility and incorporates vegetated roofs, rainwater collection and gray-water systems, daylighting strategies and bio-retention flters. The project was Design/Build delivery. The architect-of-record was Cox Graae + Spack. SHW Group was the associate architect and its affliate company, Cambridge Group, provided instructional consulting services.
