S ituated on a tight urban site, lincoln elementary school is located in a prominent neighborhood, two blocks west of the Lake Michigan shore. The original building exterior did not complement the surrounding area or portray the high quality of education provided within. TMP conducted vision planning sessions with staff, students, parents and community members to identify needs and plans for improvements. A new entrance façade updates the building's curb appeal. An expanded community garden both enhances the educational offerings of the school and creates a stronger community connection. Portions of the original school were preserved and enhanced, including a stone entry arch and wall, now part of the new light-flled two-story lobby. The addition includes nine classrooms, increasing student capacity from 350 to 500. Other updates include: an auditorium conversion to a multipurpose room, new occupational therapy rooms, relocation of administrative offces, new art and music classrooms, new kitchen, elevator, library renovations, stairwells and an external corridor to improve circulation, as well as an internal courtyard renovation allowing for outdoor dining and events. Sustainable elements include an abundance of natural light, sunshades and energy-effcient systems providing thermal comfort, recycled-content fnish materials and low-VOC paint and adhesives.
