Facility Focus PHOTOS © HALKIN PHOTOGRAPHY LIBR ARIES & LE ARNING COMMONS Anne Arundel Community College Truxal Library T HE EXPANSION AND renovation of the Truxal Library at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD, nearly doubled the size of the library, upgraded it technologically, and turned the Modernist structure green. One of the three original buildings from the 1968 campus, the Truxal Library's new two-story glass façade, emphasizing new technologies, is the first image of the library seen by visitors to the campus. The expansion added 32,000 sq. ft. to the south side of the existing 45,000-sq.-ft. structure, which is located adjacent to the College's entrance road. According to school officials, positioning the addition on the 92 south side, the last remaining open area on the central campus, reasserts the library as the focus of the academic quad while creating a new iconic image for the College. Inside, a double-height space contains individual and shared computer workstations and surrounding group study rooms for collaborative learning. The full-height glass is embedded with a ceramic pattern to control sunlight and reduce glare on the computer screens. A 900-sq.-ft. lounge for relaxing between classes contains rocking chairs, upholstered seating, vending area, and fireplace. Throughout the building, 224 computers are available for student and community use. The new 134-seat COLLEGE PLANNING & MANAGEMENT / MAY 2013 Technology Learning Center and two new computer labs will provide information literacy training. The project design includes many sustainable features to reach the goal of LEED Silver certification, including a vegetated roof with a landscaped rain garden to contain storm water run-off, an automated lighting system based on occupancy and available natural light, and extensive use of building products and interior finishes made from recycled materials. The 32,000-sq.-ft. expansion and 45,000-sq.-ft. renovation were completed in 2012 at a construction cost of $17.2M by Philadelphia-based EwingCole Architects. WWW.PLANNING 4EDUCATION.COM
