To meet the demand, 34 percent of the institutions surveyed reported that they plan on opening new residence halls in the next three years. The majority of the of the new residence halls being planned will be owned and operated by the university. When asked about the impact of the economy on the number of students living on campus, 41 percent of the institutions reported no effect. Thirtyeight percent reported an increase in the number of students living on campus, while only 21 percent reported a decrease. Nearly half of the respondents reported seeing more students living at home and commuting to classes. Whether the buildings on your campus are two years old or two decades old, they all need to be maintained. Forty-seven percent of the institutions polled are in the process of renovating or upgrading their facilities. Renovations have been put on hold in 20 percent of the institutions (up from 12 percent in 2012) due to budget constraints. The lack of sufficient space has made it nearly impossible for many institutions to make improvements to their residence halls on a rotating basis. Adding to the challenge are the increases we are seeing in the number of institutions offering, or planning to offer, on-campus 12-month housing options. Forty-five percent of institutions polled already offer 12-month housing, and plans are in the works at another seven percent of institutions. Many are fi nding it a challenge to balance utilizing bed spaces to maximize revenue and providing access for maintaining the facilities.
