NEWS + TRENDS TechWatch COMMUNITY INVESTMENT Mobility Symposium and Competition New Technology Center ech Allies Consulting and its Mobility division, MindCrate, announced they have joined with the Northern Kentucky University (NKU) Business Informatics Department in hosting a mobile app symposium and competition. The event, held February 8 and 9 at the new state-of-the-art NKU Business Informatics Griffin Hall Digitorium, was geared toward all disciplines to give the participating students a real-world learning environment in business informatics and to challenge their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. Students teamed up and were given 24 hours to design, develop, and present a mobile application to a panel of judges and other students. The top three teams were awarded funds, and the winning team received an opportunity to be awarded a technology internship offered by Tech Allies. This was an excellent opportunity to bring together the internationally recognized academics at NKU and business exper- Inventory Locator Service, LLC (ILS), a subsidiary of The Boeing Company headquartered in Memphis, has partnered with Southwest Tennessee Community College (Southwest) to open a new technology center on campus. The grand opening of the Inventory Locator Service Technology Center took place February 26. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by remarks from Dr. Nathan Essex, president of Southwest, and ILS President Eric Anderson. The Center will serve as a lab for both students and teachers to study information technology and develop new products and services that will benefit the College. Anderson notes that the sponsorship is a perfect fit for the ILS mission. "A company rarely has the opportunity to invest in something that will help its community over the long term and also potentially shape future employees," says Anderson. "We are proud to support the Boeing and ILS commitment to leadership in technology and innovation." ILS also continues its 24-year sponsorship of the Minnie Ash/ILS Endowed Scholarship at Southwest, named for Minnie Ash, the first president of ILS and a Southwest graduate. + M O B I L E I N N O VAT I O N T tise of Tech Allies/MindCrate to form a long-term synergistic relationship using education and business to address the technology solutions of tomorrow. With over 75 students participating, the event encompassed undergraduate and graduate students as well as a select group of high school students: five freshmen and three sophomores from Dixie Heights High School in Edgewood, KY. Dr. Teuta Cata, associate professor, Business Informatics Department at NKU, says that she was "very proud of the creativity, motivation, and professionalism of the NKU students that participated in this event. They worked very hard to come up with original and innovative ideas for mobile apps, and delivered great presentations and prototypes. They exceeded my expectations." Jake Jones, freshman at Dixie Heights High School, adds, "I was really excited that I was invited to this event and truly felt that this opportunity would benefit me in preparing for college." + CLASSROOM TOOLS Document Camera Contest Epson is asking post-secondary educators in the U.S. to share their top five benefits of using document cameras in the classroom for a chance to win one of four Epson DC-20 document cameras during the "Epson Document Camera in the Classroom Contest." Educators can find additional information, a complete set of rules, and submit their entries online at www. epson.com/doccamcontest between March 15 and May 10, 2013. Submissions will be judged on the following criteria: creative use of document cameras in the classroom (50 percent), practicality of implementing the idea using real life examples/application (25 percent), and impact of using document cameras on student learning (25 percent). Epson will select the top four entries and highlight them on the new Epson document camera website www.epson.com/documentcameras.com. Winners will be announced in early June 2013. "Document cameras are undeniably a valuable teaching tool and we have added many powerful features to our latest document camera," says Sara Kim, associate product manager, K-12 Education Marketing, Epson America.
