Campus Scene IN T HE SPOT LIGH T Ask the Expert New Student Center for Oral Roberts University MODERN, SLEEK, AND YOUTHFUL ARE JUST A FEW OF THE descriptors appropriate for the newly completed Armand Hammer Alumni-Student Center designed by KSQ Architects for Oral Roberts University (ORU) in Tulsa, OK. The student center was dedicated on February 1. The $11M building encompasses 28,000 sq. ft. The exterior is comprised of a creamy, imported thin porcelain tile and blue reflective glass, a striking, modern combination that underscores a fresh new image for the University. The west- and south-facing exterior elevations feature a perforated metal screen wall that by day acts as a sunscreen and by night as a dramatic electronic LED light display. The south screen also serves as a backdrop for drive-in movies and 3D light shows. Inside, a vibrant, youthful color palette and contemporary furnishings serve to delineate student activity zones including quiet spaces, live performance areas, pool tables and video game consoles, an Internet café, and a mammoth 12-ft. by 21-ft. screen for viewing concerts, sporting events, or serious video game competitions. The second floor of the student center houses alumni relations and development offices, and serves as a gathering space for alumni events. SLCC to Offer Homeland Security Degree The Utah Board of Regents has approved the Utah System of Higher Education's first Homeland Security and Emergency Management associate of applied science (A.A.S.) degree at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). The degree was developed in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration, the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, various medical institutions, and other regional agencies and employers. The new degree will prepare students for entry-level careers in the field of homeland security and emergency management. The College has already offered { CONT. ON PAGE 8 } This Month Classroom Technology How can technology better support collaborative learning? HOW WE INTERACT WITH OTHERS IS OFTEN SHAPED BY THE TECHNOLOGY TOOLS AT HAND. This is also the case within the classroom. While most classrooms effectively support lecture mode, there is an opportunity to rethink how classroom technology can be adapted to better support collaborative interactions to facilitate a more active learning process. It is found that when learners can make their thinking visible, collaboration becomes easier to accomplish. Years ago we would have seen this in the format of flip boards or situations where students would huddle around one piece of paper in an attempt to share content with each other. Today technology is helping to remove these types of barriers and democratize how people access and share information by allowing all participants to contribute their ideas — equally, quickly, and seamlessly. One example is the use of projector screens. Many large classrooms or lecture halls today have more than one projector screen. Instead of duplicating content across both screens all the time, consider having one of them serve as a shared screen during discussions. This second screen can display a real-time class Twitter feed or, in combination with multi-device synchronization software, can allow others such as a TA to project their device content.
