In the high school this is even more pronounced because of the age of the students and the struggles that adolescence involves. The school environment can be a help or a hindrance in aiding the faculty and admin- istration in achieving the goals of both educating and socialization. In our design for Benjamin Banneker H.S., we considered the primary ob- jectives in creating a building, which facilitates the educational process, makes a positive image for the students and the community, and allows for ease of use by the faculty and administration while carefully maintaining sustainability and cost-effective constructability. The key design element for all of this is the circulation organization. A main street connects the educational wings to the core functions of the building; cafeteria, media center, fine arts, athletics and administration. Each educational wing is comprised of classrooms, career technology labs, science labs and support staff space that provide the flexibility for independent learning in an traditional classroom organization or an academy grade-level layout.
