NEWS + TRENDS TechWatch + S T E M E D U C AT O R S Award Winners Announced V ernier Software & Technology and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) awarded seven educators — ranging from middle school to college-level — with 2013 Vernier/NSTA Technology Awards. Each of these winners was selected by an NSTA-appointed panel of experts for their innovative use of datacollection technology. Each winner was formally recognized at this year's annual NSTA Conference in San Antonio, TX in April, and receive $1,000 in cash, $3,000 in Vernier products, and up to $1,500 toward expenses to attend the conference. "The use of data-collection technology in the classroom helps foster students' interest in STEM education and provides them with engaging, hands-on opportunities for scientific investigation," says David Vernier, co-founder of Vernier and a former physics teacher. "For 10 years, Vernier and NSTA have recognized innovative STEM educators through this award and this year's winners are no exception. Their projects and programs truly utilize the power of data-collection technology as part of the teaching and learning process." This year's higher education winner, Heidi Bulfer, Colby Community College, in Colby, KS, plans to extend a photosynthesis and respiration lab from Vernier by having biology students use data-collection technology skills to create and test hypotheses looking at the photosynthesis and respiration rates of different agricultural crops grown in northwest Kansas. ACUTA announced the awards during the organization's 42nd Annual Conference in San Diego. The award for Institutional Excellence in Communications Technology is ACUTA's premier recognition of the work being done on college and university campuses. The University of the South was recognized for its wireless and network infrastructure project, a strategic initiative to provide improved access to campus servers and information systems, online course materials, and the Internet, including many resources from the library. The project will provide wireless coverage for "beyond the walls" learning and recreational experiences. Washington University in St. Louis was recognized for its Emergency Mass Communications Dashboard Project, an innovative mass communications plan designed to reach every member of the University community through a single, comprehensive, web-accessible interface. Indiana University received the award for its IUanyWare initiative, which empowered its community with cutting-edge services that deliver valuable software and resources to 110,000 students, faculty, and staff when, where, and how they need them. IUanyWare provides hundreds of software titles from the cloud to any device through an easy-to-use, secure online interface. + R O B O T C O M B AT STEM Ed Via Robotics League Championships Local manufacturers in Indianapolis, IN, have been working to advance Indiana's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through creative efforts that culminate in this year's National Robotics League (NRL) Championships.
