Wright State to Cut Campus Energy Consumption Wright State University in Dayton, OH, plans to slash campus energy consumption by nearly 40 percent through energy-efficiency investments that include applying state-of-the-art technology to modernize heating/cooling plants in buildings across its Dayton and Lake (Celina, OH) campuses. The move promises to save the University $35.8M over the next 15 years. "This is a game-changer for us in terms of sustainability," says Mark M. Polatajko, vice president for business and fiscal affairs and University treasurer. "It not only saves Wright State and taxpayers millions of dollars in energy costs, but also enables the University to dramatically reduce its long-term maintenance costs and positions us as a regional leader in energy conservation initiatives." The University intends to sign a $25.2M contract with ABM Industries Inc. to implement energy efficiency measures through ABM's Bundled Energy Services (BES) program. Polatajko says the new system will also save $225,000 a year in maintenance costs and pay for itself in 12.7 years. Embry-Riddle Will Offer Degree in Commercial Space Operations Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has announced plans to launch the nation's first bachelor's degree in Commercial Space Operations. The new degree program, offered at the Daytona Beach, FL, campus of the world's largest accredited aviation and aerospace academic institution, will supply the commercial spaceflight industry with skilled graduates in the areas of space policy, operations, regulation, and certification, as well as space flight safety and space program training, management, and planning. Graduates of the new degree program will have the qualifications needed to fill jobs in management; training and education; policy, safety, program and project planning; human factors; regulation; flight planning; and operations. Final approval for the program, slated to begin in Fall 2013, is pending Board of Trustees approval this month. The expansion of commercial spacefl ight operations is fostered by NASA's commercial cargo and crew development programs and by entrepreneurs developing capabilities for suborbital spacefl ight, orbital space habitats, space resource prospecting, and other commercial ventures.
