New data analysis released by the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education confirms that, while the state's high school population is slowly declining, many public campuses across the state continue to see a rise in undergraduate enrollment, driven by two specific population groups. The 2012 Early Enrollment Report presented to the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education in October reveals significant one-year enrollment growth at five campuses: Framingham State University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Fitchburg State University, Bunker Hill Community College, and Northern Essex Community College. The state's public higher education system continues to see substantial growth in student enrollment within two specific population groups: Latino students and adult students aged 25 and over. Between 2008 and 2011, new enrollment by students 25 years old or older increased by 21 percent, compared to 6 percent for students below the age of 25. One in four students in the public higher education system is now at or above the age of 25. New Latino student enrollment at Massachusetts's public colleges and universities increased 50 percent. The enrollment of non-Latino students increased 7 percent during the same period. Ohio University Receives More Than $2M in Grants The Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment (ISEE) at Ohio University in Athens has been awarded more than $2M in state and federal grants to support research to clean the wastewater that results from hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," on site. The ISEE is a research center at OHIO's Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology. The money is coming from the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) and the Ohio Third Frontier. The RPSEA is a nonprofit corporation established to help meet the nation's growing need for the hydrocarbon resources produced from American reservoirs. It awarded more than $1.9M for the ISEE's project, "Cost-Effective Treatment of Flowback and Produced Water via an Integrated Precipitative Supercritical (IPSC) Process." The Ohio Third Frontier provided $50,000 in project funding, which received a match from both the Russ College and the Ohio University Office of Technology Transfer for a total of $100,000.
